Wrestling starts season with six champions, 53 victories at Pepsi Patriot Open

CORBIN, Ky. – Bellarmine wrestling opened its season on Saturday at the Pepsi Patriot Open in Corbin, Ky.  The Knights competed against opponents from 30 teams and had a very successful first day on the mat.

With brackets divided into a freshman/sophomore division and open division, four Knights wrestlers won their weight classes, while two were named co-champions.

BU finished the tournament with the best win percentage out of 30 teams at 73 percent.

“Man, what a day,” Knights Head Coach Ned Shuck said.  “We wanted to see fireworks from our guys, and they delivered! I’m so proud of the fight they had, and seeing them execute the skill sets they’ve been working hard at in the room. We can’t wait to get back with them to build off of so many positives from today. The success is something we will celebrate shortly and continue to strive for more of as the competition continues to get stiffer.”

Bellarmine had multiple wrestlers fight their way to the championship match in their respective weight classes.  In the freshman/sophomore division, Damion Ryan picked up four wins and defeated Corretjer (Central Baptist) by major decision 16-8 in the 125 title match. Trayce Eckman won three times and ultimately was named co-champion alongside Michael Schiffhauer in the 133 class. Darian Huff won four times, including a pin less than a minute into his 174 championship bout against Kirgin Tanis (Rochester).  Kennedy Wyatt also claimed first place at 184, winning four times.  Wyatt bested Christian Just (Southeastern) by a 12-6 decision in his championship match.  Thaddeus Huff was Bellarmine’s other champion on Saturday with five wins and an 11-6 victory by decision over Dezi Johnsen (Oklahoma Wesleyan) in the heavyweight title match.

In the open division, Zac Cowan recorded a pair of pins along with two wins by decision, helping him reach the championship bout in 149.  Cole Nance landed four wins wrestling at 165, including a fall, major decision, tech fall, and sudden victory.  Nance ultimately placed third in his weight class.

Other Knights wrestlers who scored for the team were Noah Rowlett (Fresh/Soph 184), Devon Rahrig (Fresh/Soph 197), Jack Parker (Open 125),  Easton Tobia (Open 165), and Alex River (Open 174).
