Wrestling Finishes Second at Messiah Open, Generals Take First in Three Weight Classes

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Washington and Lee University wrestling team opened up the 2022-23 season with a second-place showing at the Messiah Invitational on Saturday. 

The team placed eight on the podium and three individuals took first in their respective weight classes to finish with 123 team points and a second-place showing. 

Elizabethtown edged the Generals by half a point, with 123.5 points, to take home the team title on opening weekend. 

 

Individually, the Blue and White were led by Riley Parker (125), Evan Linder (133) and Cameron Blizard (184) who all took first place and defeated their respective opponents by decision. 

The team’s leading individual scorer with 19 points, Harris Foad (141) tallied two pins and placed second and David Rubin (133) and John Ryan Sedvoy (197) each won the consolation bracket to place third.

Parker received a first round bye then went on to win three straight matches, 14-5, 16-7 and 6-1 to tally two major decisions to start off the year. He defeated Terry Adams (Ursinus) in the first place match. 

Lindner finished the day 4-0 and won by major decision in the first round and semi-final match and by decision in the quarterfinal and first place match. In the quarterfinal round, Linder defeated teammate, David Rubin 6-0. In the 133 first place match, Lindner defeated Brent Lorin of Johns Hopkins 8-2. Rubin then went on to win the 133 third place match. 

Cameron Blizard received a first round bye then went 4-0 through the remainder of the invitational including a win by tech fall in the second round over Hopkins’ Elliott Lee. 

Savoy went 4-1 throughout the day, he started 3-0 and fell to Jackson Punzel (Wheaton) in the semifinal match,  8-3. Savoy won the third place match by decision over Messiah’s Joe Embleton, 7-4.

Up next, Washington and Lee will compete at the Averett University Cougar open on Sunday, November 13.
